Many stories detail brilliant floating lights wildly dancing through the trees and along the trails of Cameron Park. Some allege the dancing orbs are the spiritual manifestations of Lovers’ Leap suicide victims, while other tales refer to the Motorcycle/Tar Pits legend. A few more eclectic versions of the story claim the orbs are devilish fairies out to wreak a little bit of mischief. Whatever their origin, the dancing orbs spin erratically throughout the forest, only to vanish – for no apparent reason – as quickly as they appear.
The legends and folktales in Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Legends from the Heart of Texas, compiled by Bradley T. Turner and accompanied by photographs from Mark Burdine, bring to life the whispered stories and forgotten secrets that illuminate the darkest recesses of the Texas psyche from the distant past to the present day.
