Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

I have heard that phrase countless times, particularly when I was a child. I never understood it, though. When browsing bookstores, I always chose the book whose cover spoke to me most, even spending a touch more on a prettier cover. Most times, my shopping methods work out for me. Sometimes, though, I am duped by clever art directors! (I’m still disgruntled about In The Woods by Tana French.)

Newest Book Documents Texas Frontier Forts

One doesn’t live in San Angelo, Texas, for 10 years and not learn something about the trail of forts built in the mid-1800s primarily to protect pioneers headed west. Fort Concho in San Angelo is a beautifully restored pioneer fort, and the city has built El Paseo de Santa Angela nearby as well as the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.

Several years ago, I saw a couple of Victorian chairs covered in a colorful tapestry of books. Shelves of books covered the chairs. They were the most wonderful chairs I had ever seen. I envisioned them as guest chairs in my editor’s office. It was only when I ventured into the store and found a price tag did I question whether I would ever own such magnificent chairs.
